The Conjurverse expands yet again with “The Nun II,” inviting audiences to another haunting cinematic experience. Serving as the ninth entry in a seemingly endless line of Conjuring tales, one might wonder if the scare well is running dry. Ah, who am I kidding? Keep making them, and I’ll keep showing up!
Set in France, “The Nun II” sees the malevolent demon Valak haunting an ancient monastery that has been turned into a boarding school. As characters grapple with the demon and their personal challenges, the boundaries between faith and fear blur, culminating in a climax that melds personal redemption with confronting the mother of all evil.
Visually, “The Nun II” does not disappoint. With the beautiful, atmospheric backdrops of France serving as a canvas, the film’s cinematography paints a picture that’s both mesmerizing and chilling. James Wan’s influence, though not directly behind the camera this time, can be felt throughout, especially in how tension is built and delivered.
The narrative, while not groundbreaking, is solid and straightforward. Fans of The Conjurverse will find comfort in its familiar embrace, while newcomers or general horror fans can appreciate its well-paced, self-contained story. However, “The Nun II” might have benefited from a lesson in moderation.
Bonnie Aarons’ Nun is undeniably a force of terror, but her near-constant presence in the film makes one yearn for subtler scares. Sometimes, what’s left lurking in the shadows can be more terrifying than what’s fully illuminated.
Overall, The Nun II is a welcome addition to The Conjurverse universe, even if it leans a bit too heavily on its namesake antagonist. It’s definitely worth the watch for fans and might offer a few jumps for the casual viewer; it may not be divine in relation to its narrative, but it’s still devilishly entertaining.
