The group consists of Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm, aka The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Over the years, this family of heroes has won the hearts of many, defeating numerous villains and keeping Earth and its people safe. But now, these heroes and their entire world are about to face a few surprises… and not all of them are good news.

A Baby on the Way — and a World in Peril

After trying for two years, Sue finally discovers that she’s pregnant with Reed’s child. However, given their superpowers, Reed grows increasingly concerned that their baby may also inherit extraordinary and possibly dangerous abilities. Complicating matters further, Earth receives a visit from an alien being named Shalla-Bal, also known as the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). She brings a dire warning for the planet and The Fantastic Four: a god-like entity named Galactus (Ralph Ineson) is on his way, intent on destroying Earth and all its inhabitants. Now, The Fantastic Four must confront a threat unlike anything they’ve faced before—one with the power to wipe out everything in existence. The clock is ticking. Can Galactus be stopped before it’s too late?

A Fresh Chapter in the Marvel Universe

For those unaware, The Fantastic Four: First Steps serves as a continuation of the well-known Marvel Universe, with no connection to the previous Fantastic Four films. It also marks the beginning of a new phase in the Marvel timeline, introducing fresh characters and a storyline that I found genuinely unexpected.

Action, Adventure, and a Touch of Heart

While the film primarily falls under the action and adventure genres, it also delivers surprising doses of drama and heartfelt moments. Sure, there are some gags and comedic beats, but they’re far more restrained compared to other Marvel entries—such as Thor: Love and Thunder. Ultimately, The Fantastic Four: First Steps feels more like a fun space adventure than anything else.

Casting That’s Better Than Fantastic

I loved the lead performances and casting choices in The Fantastic Four. Each actor delivers a strong, charismatic performance, and together they share terrific chemistry, almost as if they were a real-life family. The leads are incredibly likable, relatable, and genuinely charming. I wouldn’t just say the cast was fantastic—if anything, they were better than fantastic. They were stellar.

A Score That Soars, A World That Pops

The film’s musical score by Michael Giacchino is loud, epic, and ideally suited to the story, especially during the third act, where it truly soars. The production design is also stunning. From the cars and costumes to the set pieces and technology, everything beautifully captures the era. The film doesn’t just transport viewers to a different time; it feels like a comic book come to life, bursting with imaginative concepts and vibrant colours.

Surprises, Stakes, and a Strong Finish

To avoid spoilers, I’ll keep major plot details under wraps, but I will say that I found much of the story refreshingly unpredictable. I was genuinely eager to uncover the mysteries and unanswered questions introduced in the opening act. In terms of pacing, the film initially feels like it plays it a little safe in the entertainment department. However, my excitement ramped up significantly during the third and final act, which I found deeply rewarding. The film closes on a powerful note, delivering high stakes, emotional weight, and, most importantly, thrilling action.

Final Verdict: The Best Fantastic Four Yet

Overall, The Fantastic Four: First Steps takes Marvel fans on a fresh journey through a different time period. The plot genuinely surprised me, and the experience kept me guessing from start to finish. The chemistry between the four leads is better than fantastic: it’s stellar. The same goes for the costumes and the striking setting, which truly make it feel like a comic book brought to life. That said, the film’s pacing plays things a little safe and familiar, with the third act standing out as the absolute highlight. Still, this is easily the best version of the superhero team we’ve seen on screen to date!
