John (Steve Howey) & Katie Kelly (Eliza Coupe) are finally moving into their dream home. Once they settle in, it’s evident that the two desire to fall pregnant and begin a new chapter of their life. But it turns out that falling pregnant isn’t always an easy, simple task. Unable to fall pregnant, John & Katie soon discover that fulfilling their desires will take a lot more work than expected as they seek advice and begin medical treatment and tests with support from friends and family.
Naturally, this type of film will only attract a certain range of movie lovers (particularly those who have had children or who can relate to a similar journey and the frustration of making a baby). It’s a tricky topic to tackle, but thankfully, the film balances the humour and heart necessary. The best jokes are rather awkward ones, such as Katie’s mum sharing about her sex life during a wedding service and questioning John’s, well, you know.
Actors Steve Howey & Eliza Coupe worked positively as the leading characters and were truly convincing on screen as a couple. The jokes and most of the heartfelt moments of this film generally came from the top actors (well, at least for me, it did).
The film also has multiple side characters trying to bring laughs by using random dialogue. Sadly this didn’t always work for me. Also, certain scenes had camera movements that seemed shaky and became uncomfortable for the viewer.
Overall, while Making Babies isn’t a film for everyone, I feel it will be enjoyed by audience members who can relate to trying to fall pregnant and the effort it can take to see the significant miracle of a baby. There are some jokes to be had, but some jokes don’t always land a laugh either. The film has some heart which was also surprising to see.
