Expert mountain climber Gabe (Sylvester Stallone) retires after witnessing a tragic accident that cost the life of one of his friends. Wounded emotionally, Gabe takes a year away from climbing but is soon forced to climb again after he receives word of stranded members stuck on a mountain during a snowstorm. The only catch is that the stranded people are bad guys seeking cash that has fallen from a hijacked aeroplane.
Gabe will soon have to defend himself while trying to stop these people at all costs. With little support from the ground, Gabe must use his skills and wits to survive the day in the mountains.
Cliffhanger is a very entertaining action film, which I usually compare with the “Die Hard” franchise. Stallone takes the lead with a likeable character, and I found myself cheering him on as he tries to survive. The film also manages to deliver many surprising moments regarding the plot. At most times, the film is unpredictable. John Lithgow plays our main villain, and sometimes I feel he steals the show. With his evil one-liners, he was perfectly cast as the film’s villain. Other villains in this film are slightly cliche.
Recently I purchased this film on 4K, and honestly it’s the best I’ve ever seen this movie, having owned this film on Bluray and DVD. The restoration of this film on 4K is magical. The visuals are strong, but the film’s audio track won me over very quickly. The film’s score and sound effects are complete, with wind, helicopters and bullets packed nicely onto the disc. While rewatching this film, I found myself smiling and having a good time, and that’s the type of movie this is. It’s popcorn entertainment that you should share with your friends.
Overall, I’m proud to reveal that Cliffhanger is one of my guilty pleasures regarding fun, brainless action and entertainment. The action is enjoyable, and the plot has plenty of twists and turns, keeping it exciting until the credits roll. If you’ve never seen it, be sure to experience it today.
