Aaron Falk (Eric Bana) is a detective located in Melbourne, Australia. He receives word that one of his childhood friends has committed suicide after murdering his family. Aaron returns to his hometown to pay his respects, but what he hoped would be a short visit back home instead turns into assisting in the current investigation.
But when the local community receives word about Aaron’s involvement, people are not too kind towards him. You see, when Aaron was younger, he was a prime suspect in the death of a young teenage girl. In the present day, many still don’t believe Aaron’s innocence. Aaron will have to deal with many hurts as he begins to relive the past, along with attempting to find answers to the town’s most recent murder-suicide case.
The Dry has a great setup and a great character introduction to Aaron. We understand that he is sad to hear about the loss of his friend, and he is not looking forward to returning home. Eric Bana delivers a tremendous and convincing performance as Aaron. As a character, he is likeable, and it is easy as an audience member to support him. Side performances are also solid, and each one was welcoming to see.
I found the plot pleasing. The mysteries introduced hooked me right away. The Dry is full of secrets, and everyone in town is a prime suspect (including Aaron himself). The film’s reveal was tremendous, and I found nothing was too obvious or predictable from start to finish. Visually, I loved the look of this film, and the gritty movie tones are a perfect match for this story.
Overall, The Dry is most certainly a great film that introduces several mysteries, and the outcomes are never predictable. With a beautiful setup, The Dry hooks its audience efficiently and takes them on an unforgettable murder mystery. Eric Bana, as the lead, is tremendous, and the character is highly likeable. For an Australian film, this most certainly deserves more attention.
