In a secret location is an imprisoned hedgehog named Shadow (voiced by Keanu Reeves). Shadow has been locked away for fifty years, but unexpectedly and mysteriously, his capsule unlocks, allowing him to regain his freedom. Despite the best efforts of armed guards to stop him, Shadow is far too mighty, and he successfully escapes.
Meanwhile, we find Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), and Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessy) in the woods, accompanied by Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). This family is celebrating the day Sonic came to Earth, a day that changed Tom and Maddie’s lives. However, their celebration is soon interrupted by Director Rockwell (Krysten Ritter).
Director Rockwell informs them about the recent troubles with Shadow, emphasising that everyone will need to work together to stop him. It will be up to Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails to team up and save the world. As Sonic and his friends accept the mission, they soon realise they have much to learn about teamwork and the importance of relying on each other. With no other options available, they must confront an old foe, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), who might hold the key to stopping Shadow.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a family film with plenty of wacky and witty comedic moments and great messaging for all ages. Get ready for an emotional journey as Sonic and his family discover the true meaning of choices and learn how to overcome their past. The film features a host of random one-liners, puns, and pop culture references, including a memorable moment that breaks the fourth wall, thanks to the quirky interactions between Dr. Robotnik and his newly discovered grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, both portrayed by Jim Carrey.
If you are familiar with the previous instalments, fans of the films, games, and characters will have a good idea of what to expect. However, to my surprise, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 takes things to the next level, making it easily the best film in the series. Firstly, the pacing is significantly improved. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is never dull, with something constantly happening as Sonic and his friends jump from one challenge to the next. The primary characters in the film are Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails, along with Dr. Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik, who have substantial screen time. I was pleased to see less involvement from the characters Tom and Maddie, who I find more annoying and sillier. Furthermore, the upbeat messaging in this instalment is more meaningful and impactful than ever.
Audiences will likely be delighted by the captivating introduction of the film’s villain, Shadow. Keanu Reeves delivers tremendously fitting voice work for this character. In terms of comedy, Jim Carrey steals the show once again, playing two equally wild and hilarious characters. The gags are well-timed and expertly delivered, ensuring plenty of giggles and solid laughs throughout the film.
Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the most excellent adventure we’ve seen our heroes undertake. The stakes and laughs are higher, and the film’s heartfelt message is also impactful and clear. The pacing is fast and terrific, and there’s always something happening on-screen, such as brainless action sequences. The film’s new villain, Shadow, is highly likeable, and so is the voice work from Keanu Reeves. Jim Carrey steals the show again through his comedic ability and timing, not as one but two different characters, both of whom will easily make you laugh with the many well-delivered and highly random one-liners and quirks. Ultimately, the film is “galvanised” with excitement and fun- not to be missed!
