Following the original Sing (2016), Buster Moon (Voiced again by Matthew McConaughey) and his ragtag theatre troops are faced with a new and exciting challenge. The challenge is unlike anything they’ve done before, to pursue a reclusive rock star named Clay Calloway (Bono) to join them at the opening of a brand new show.
A new storyline, a stunning soundtrack and a star-studded lineup featuring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansen, Taron Egerton certainly made Sing 2 on my list of most anticipated films of 2021. And boy did it deliver! Visually stunning, well-paced and a whole heap of fun, Sing 2 in a wild ride that will have you laughing one minute, tearing up the next and on the edge of your seat moments later.

Buster is done with regional theatre – he wants to hit the big time! He and his crew set off for the big city to try and impress the “Simon Cowell of the Sing-Verse” – Jimmy Crystal. Buster can con his way into getting face time with Jimmy and promises him his new show will feature Clay Colloway (Bono), the reclusive Rock Icon. That’s all swell, except Buster hasn’t even met Caly before; this sets the scene for the madness and ensures they try to get the show ready in time and convince Jimmy that yes – Clay will be there!

Whilst similar to the first film in terms of the overall theme – never giving up, fighting for your dreams and all that good stuff – the added element of having to seek out Clay and convince him to join them opened up a whole world of opportunity for the filmmakers. To have access to not only Bono’s voice but a selection of U2 songs to pepper throughout the soundtrack meant that kids, parents and grandparents alike would have a personal connection to the film through the music. You try not tearing up while a cute little porcupine with a massive voice sings a solo of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”.

Overall, it’s often hit and miss for actors’ featuring in animation films; however, Sing 2 brings out the best in the talent. The real standout, of course, is voice work from Matthew McConaughey as Buster Moon (aka the Koala). The animator’s ability to bring the character to life in tune with his performance was nothing short of brilliant. Sing 2 is certainly a perfect film for the whole family and comes highly recommended if you love the first feature.
