The film begins by introducing a mysterious woman named Cynthia (Demi Moore), who is about to be interrogated at a police station by Det. John Woods (Harvey Keitel). Cynthia is about to reveal dark secrets from the past, which could be the key to solving a horrific murder case. We see Cynthia’s story through a series of flashbacks.
Cynthia is a hairdresser and is married with two children. Cynthia works with her best friend, Joyce (Glenne Headly), who recently married James (Bruce Willis). Unfortunately, James and Joyce’s marriage is toxic and abusive. This painful relationship also affects Cynthia’s workplace, and we see James visiting the salon and continuing to be disrespectful and rude to Joyce. He is harsh to those around him, only truly caring about himself. But one night, when Cynthia, Joyce and James go out together, something horrific happens- a murder! Can Cynthia’s testimony bring light to who the killer is and what happened around the murder?
Mortal Thoughts is a fun thriller that jumps right into its many mysteries. Audiences will discover all the facts simultaneously as Cynthia starts revealing her story through various flashbacks. At first, we have no idea why Cynthia is at the police station, but we soon learn that something bad has occurred, and the aftermath has affected her. The good news is it’s not long until the audience is invested, curiously raising questions such as who got murdered, who is behind the tragic crime and why?
As far as pacing is concerned, the movie starts slowly but becomes more engaging, especially when major plot details are expanded further. The filming style and dark neo-noir thriller themes are fun and pleasing. Performances are enjoyable from Demi Moore as Cynthia; she is believable and mysterious throughout the duration. Bruce Willis is perfect here as James, who is extremely selfish, harsh and carries a foul temper. Supporting roles, including Harvey Keitel, were also a delight, even if his performance seemed somewhat familiar. The musical score is highly fitting and serves a real treat.
Overall, this is a fun thriller that begins with a vague and small storyline that grows into something far greater than I expected. It’s filled with exciting mysteries that keep viewers engaged and continually guessing the big reveals. Performances are great, with Demi Moore being mysterious and believable and Bruce Willis playing a harsh character. With a good musical score and dark tones, this is a rewarding thriller that mixes themes of violence, friendship and trust. The climax ends on a high note which also feels extremely rewarding, making this film quite entertaining all around.
