It’s the biggest wedding event ever! Music icons, Kat (Jennifer Lopez) and Bastian (Maluma) are planning to get married and launch their newest song, “Marry Me”, on a concert stage, an event which will be live-streamed to millions of viewers around the entire world! But when the main event occurs and as Kat prepares to perform her song before delivering her touching vows on stage, she receives word that her soon to be husband has been cheating on her. Heartbroken, upset and speechless, Kat continues onto the stage and does something radical.
Among Kat’s loud screaming fans is a man named Charlie (Owen Wilson), a high school mathematics teacher who was dragged along to attend the concert by a fellow teacher and his young daughter. Now he’s stuck in the audience holding a “Marry Me” sign. While on stage, Kat sees Charlie and his sign from afar and thinks, “why not”. On the spot, she offers to marry a stranger, aka Charlie, instead of Bastian. Seeing her heartbreak, Charlie also thinks ‘why not’ and agrees. The two exchange vows in front of the world, but the question is, was this on-the-spot marriage just a publicity stunt, or could there be a chance of love and romance between Kat and Charlie?
Marry Me is best described as a comedy romance, with slight moments of drama. I felt this film was beautiful, touching, and light-hearted to cut to the chase. With a simple premise and lots of heart, it’s the perfect film for when a movie lover is in the mood for a rom-com without large amounts of swearing or nudity. Call me strange, but it feels like it’s been a long time since a feel-good rom-com like this was released. So why does Marry Me work so well?
Firstly, I’m surprised to say that Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson are wonderful in this film together. They each have a complete story of heartbreak and rejection, which feels real and highly acceptable. More importantly, I loved the chemistry the two actors share on-screen, which was also quite touching and, again, feels real. There are no major belly laughs here, but I found myself chuckling several times at moments of witty dialogue, especially coming from actor Owen Wilson. The side performance from Sarah Silverman was great, and she brings fun moments that are witty and filled with energy.
Multiple musical numbers and tracks will naturally please fans of Jennifer Lopez and Maluma. While I can’t call myself a hardcore Jlo fan by any means, I will confess, I still generally enjoyed the film’s soundtrack here, which again felt positive, fun, and exciting. I’m guilty of tapping my feet several times, and I had a great time with the songs. Fans of Jlo will also enjoy elements of costuming and aspects of fashion.
Overall, Marry Me might seem like a fairly shabby rom-com, but gosh darn it, I enjoyed it a great deal. It’s a fun film with plenty of heart behind it, and the performances from both Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson are wonderful and lovely to see on-screen. Fans of Jennifer Lopez will also be excited about the entertaining musical tracks and aspects relating to costumes. In the end, I was left on a high from watching this film. It feels like it’s been a while since movie lovers were greeted by such a charming and adorable film like this, so I guess I might say Marry Me exceeded my expectations substantially.
