A man visits the residence of a well-known painter “Vincent Van Gogh” to deliver the artist’s final letter. The man soon discovers there is more to know about Vincent’s death (and life) and starts his own curious investigation in regards to Vincent’s death.
Loving Vincent is a film that is instantly different from any other film the world has ever seen. How you ask? Well, the entire film is told through painted animation in the style of Van Gogh‘s paintings. It’s like watching a moving painting, which in itself is a unique cinema experience. In fact, did you know this film is the world’s first fully painted feature!
To make this film, there were a grand total of 66,960 frames of oil paintings which were completed by 80 top painters.
Watching the film, it’s very obvious that the director is rather passionate about art, but also shows a strong respect for the work of van Gogh. While I’m personally not an artist by any means, I can admit that the film is stunning and beautiful to watch. It’s also praised worthy to see a major film stand out and make a change in cinema today (How often do you see paintings come to life like this???)
The artwork and images are outstanding to experience, but the film’s story can at times be a slight struggle. After the film introduces the plot and its lead characters, the process is very much the same in each scene. A man walks in a room and asks questions about Vincent, then moves on to another character and repeats the same process. As a film, this could be something that holds back the focus, but for someone who is interested in seeing a new way of cinema, this issue won’t bother you because you will be in such amazement of the artwork.
Overall, this film is incredible to see and I am rather thankful for the work, time and passion that has gone in for this to become a full-length feature film. While elements of the film can feel repeated, many viewers won’t mind as film’s stand out is more about the artwork and getting to know the painter “Vincent van Gogh”
