In Fabric (2018) – Movie Review

Without giving too much away, the film follows the journey of a red dress—a red dress with a curse. At the beginning of the film, we meet a lovely woman named Sheila (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), answering ads in the lonely hearts column.
Upon realising she has nothing to wear on her first outing, she journey’s to the mysterious, magical and, as we eventually discover – murderous London department store. The dress travels around London, leaving death and destruction in its wake.
Very much rooted in the “horror-comedy” genre, In Fabric is well-acted, wonderfully shot and looks great as a package. I questioned the relevance of some of the more gruesome scenes within the film, but if the film has a message, it needs to drive it home and hard! Director/Writer Peter Strickland is known for his symbolism and disorienting style. If that’s what you’re after, he doesn’t disappoint.
This film feels very much like a David Lynch feature given the reigns on a remake of “A Mom For Christmas”. (Give it a watch; you’ll see what I mean.) There are some obvious nods to the hazards of consumerism, some less obvious and others that missed the mark entirely or are lost on me. I felt frustrated when the pacing fell off, but this was undoubtedly all part of the ploy to keep its audiences disoriented.
Overall, having seen the film, writing the review took me a few days as I continued to mull over what I had witnessed. I could not decide if I was impressed, non-plussed or disturbed. In any case, In Fabric is visually splendid and a reasonably decent watch. I would recommend this less for the die-hard horror fan and more for those who enjoy a horror jaunt with Lynchian vibes that will keep them thinking.
