Continuing from Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019), Godzilla continues to hide from the world, and years have passed. But suddenly, Godzilla comes back to the surface and unexpectedly destroys a massive high-tech company. The world is now in fear as Godzilla makes his return. As for King Kong, he has been safe and sound in a gigantic dome that looks precisely like Skull Island. But as Kong continues to grow, the world will need to find him a new home soon!
With Godzilla on the loose, it is up to a small group of people to save the world. Dr Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgard) & Dr Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) have been called upon to journey into the Earth’s centre and locate an energy source that can save the world. The only catch is that they require a monster to lead the way! The team have no choice but to call upon the mighty Kong, following him while dealing with various obstacles and challenges along the way, including attacks from Godzilla himself! Can they reach the energy source in time? Can Godzilla be stopped before the world is destroyed? No matter what happens, movie lovers will witness one of the greatest showdowns in cinema history!
Those who have enjoyed the previous instalments will also be pleased to find returning characters Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) & her father, Mark (Kyle Chandler). Both returning characters have their side mission within this film as they attempt to understand why Godzilla would suddenly return.
If you’re a movie lover who enjoyed the previous instalments and are generally excited to see action sequences between Godzilla and Kong, you will be pleased with this release. I am proud to say the film has made some significant improvements with the monsters’ looks and sci-fi elements. The film’s audio tracks and bright visuals were also great, and I found these elements a significant improvement compared to the previous films. Make no mistake- if you want to witness the biggest fight in cinema history, the film is best enjoyed on a giant cinema screen.
But apart from witnessing a significant fight among monsters, Godzilla Vs. Kong goes down the path of repeated beats: vague plot, loads of sci-fi babble and dull, unimportant characters. This film gives us ambiguous characters who give movie lovers very little reason to care about them every step of the way. Performances are generally ok, but the characters are all monotone right from the start. Basically, the characters are forgettable. Returning characters are great to see, but mainly because the film uses it as a hook for its audiences.
The plot, like the characters, is also vague and feels unimportant- almost as if it is designed to take up space before the two monster’s battle. I’m disappointed to see that the film marketing department revealed major plot details in the film’s promotional trailer. These reveals took away any excitement I could have had. The film attempted to integrate humour into the plot, but again, this is another element that never worked for me. Jokes tried far too hard and failed to obtain laughter from its cinema crowd.
Overall, it’s the fight that movie lovers worldwide have been waiting to see and when it comes to the main battles between Godzilla Vs. Kong, the film generally delivers with improved visuals and a solid audio track to complement it. But sadly, like the previous instalments, the main characters are uninteresting and unimportant, and the plot is filled with sci-fi babble which feels like it only fills gaps when our monsters are not fighting each other. The film is also predictable due to poor marketing (including the film’s trailers), robbing me of any shock or surprise. Those who have loved the previous instalments within the universe will most certainly enjoy this new instalment, even if it feels familiar with a repeated heartbeat.
