Cursed Films returns in whole new five-part documentary series. Series II, like Season One, looks at the many myths and tales about some of Hollywood’s most popular horror flicks, and the reveals are bound to shock you to your core. We all love a good horror film, but what if I told you some of our favourite, classic, scary movies had lots of problems and issues behind the scenes? Some even say these films were Cursed right from the start of production.
Episode One of Season II looks at The Wizard of Oz movie, originally released back in 1939. In the present day, The Wizard of Oz is still treated as an iconic family film filled with wonderful performances, imagery, creative effects, and an unforgettable touching story. But what if I told you that the film suffered from many bizarre, horrific moments and dark rumours during production?
For instance, did you ever hear about Jack Haley, who played The Tin Man? He almost died while working on this film! Or did you ever know what occurred to actress Judy Garland after making the film? Or have you heard the rumour of a Munchkin hanging himself on the film set, even making it into the original cut of the film? Or that while staying in a large hotel, the Munchkins were rumoured to have wild parties and cause havoc?
Filled with plenty of interviews from celebrities such as Aljean Harmetz, Stephen Cox, Adam Savage, Gregg Turkington, and Lorna Luft, we find out plenty about this film’s haunting production journey. We also get to see old footage and photographs from onset, taking the audience on a deep, educational journey. Without giving too much away or any spoilers, I was surprised to find how many elements I never knew about this film. It’s no wonder many people claimed the film was Cursed. The episode itself is informative and moves at an incredible and exciting pace. I found myself engaged with this episode very early on, and the entire duration was fascinating to witness. I also appreciate the hard work of the director, producer and writer Jay Steel, who has truly put together a wonderful experience while adding a touch of spookiness into the mix.
Overall, based on the first episode of this returning series, I am officially hooked. The first episode tackles a beloved favourite family film, The Wizard of Oz, and brings new insights and details to light. Packed with fun celebrity interviews, old footage, and photographs, this is a great mini-series/documentary for those who wish to know about myths and legends of cinematic films. This series is fantastic and carries multiple moments that are also downright spooky. Season II of Cursed Films is a must-watch for cinema lovers, and I’m now eager to see the next episode, which focuses on the film Rosemary’s Baby from 1968.
