From the opening of the film, it’s self-evident that the world is no longer a safe place. The world faces a new horrible situation, and everyone who is still alive has had their lifestyle changed forever. “A Quiet Place” focuses on a family who is forced to hide from creatures. These creatures have many mysteries about them, but one thing is rather certain these creatures hunt by sound.
While I’m personally not a huge fan of horrors, this film has a strong combination of thriller and horror. From the film’s opening scene, it had me captured, and I was invested in the family that we are introduced to. There is no lengthy, dragged out storytelling here: the audience is suddenly thrown into this world of fear and silence.
A Quiet Place has a plot that is fresh, full of creativity. The plot sounds simple, but I haven’t seen a film in a long time that is delivered so creatively with a well thought out story. The film isn’t just focused on monsters or gore, but this film also demonstrates the lengths of what family members will do to survive and I loved that concept.
The audio is incredible. Even when moments are silent, there is still the sound of a slight breeze, and minor details can be heard. When things tense up, the audio track and score will have you curled up in your cinema chair ready to yell out “Mummy!”. The film from start to finish is simply unpredictable. Even if I thought about something and then it if occurred, the execution left me shocked and in awe.
The performances are all applaud worthy. John Krasinski and actress Emily Blunt, who plays Father and Mother in this film, are amazing on screen together. This is also surprising as the two are actually married in real life! It may come as a surprise to a few that actor John Krasinski is also the man behind the camera directing his 1st motion picture film. In total, the chemistry of all the actors (young and old) is awesome.
Overall, A Quiet Place is a jaw-dropping, outstanding film loaded with suspense, surprises and large amounts of unpredictability. The performances take all the actors to the next level, in particular John Krasinski, who has directed as well as acted in this film. The film will leave you on a high as if you just jumped off a roller coaster.
