Following on from the film A Street Cat Named Bob, initially released in 2016, James (Luke Treadaway) has just released his first book, also titled “A Street Cat Named Bob”. The new book reveals a great deal of insight into James’s dark past when he was addicted to drugs and was trying to earn money as a busker on the streets of London. His life changed for the better when he met a cat on the street corner, which he later named Bob. The cat named Bob gave James hope and an unlikely new friendship.
In the present day, the film begins with James attending a book launch with Bob by his side. After the big event, he walks home to his apartment and encounters a homeless man being arrested by the police. James helps the man and even buys him a nice meal. The two share a conversation as James starts to talk about a different moment from his past. The film goes back in time to when James had just gotten over his drug addiction and was working as a busker with Bob. This new, untold story reveals another challenging moment in the life of James and Bob which occurred during Christmas.
In this story of the past, while James is over his drug addiction, he struggles to make ends meet. He tries to earn money while playing his guitar but has a conflict with other people also trying to raise or earn money. Not only that, but James is also concerned about Bob as he cannot afford any vet check-ups or any treatment for Bob after a dog attacks him. Animal workers have begun an investigation as they have concerns about Bob’s well-being whilst living with James. James is feeling down in life, and Christmas for James feels hard due to his current challenges and his dark past as a young boy. As others around him speak of the importance of Christmas, James listens but does not always share the same thoughts or motivation. James and Bob are both in need of a Christmas Miracle.
As a sequel, I am thankful that this film focuses on a different time in both James and Bob’s life rather than repeating similar beats of the first film from 2016. Performances once again are lovely. Luke Treadway is excellent as James, and once again, he brings many heartfelt moments to the screen. The supporting cast is also quite flattering to see, but naturally, it is Luke Treadway, along with the performance of Bob the Cat, who both earn the biggest praise in this film.
The film is also filled with complimentary messages on the themes of Christmas and helping others. These themes feel quite fitting and welcoming as the film arrives during the Christmas season, but also as many movie lovers have been dealing with a global pandemic. Throughout the film’s plot, I was quite curious about where the film was headed, and by the film’s third and final act, I loved how everything came together. It felt like my time watching the film was undoubtedly worthwhile. As for visuals, I have no issues with the film and found the film’s soundtrack welcoming again.
Overall, I am thankful for this sequel. The film focuses on another area of the life of James and Bob the Cat. It is a touching true story of some of the challenges the two face during the Christmas period. It is a beautiful film which, like the previous movie, touched my heart and left me with watery eyes due to the film’s touching performances and themes. It is a family-friendly film and comes highly recommended even if you’ve never seen the original feature film.
