Set in the future, New York is full of street gangs. One night, the leader of all the gangs, “Cyrus”, calls a gathering of every known gang to one meeting place. As Cyrus speaks to all the gangs present, he is shot and brutally murdered. One of the street gangs known as “The Warriors” is wrongly framed for the murder of Cyrus, and now, The Warriors go on the run from all the other gangs and the police of New York City who are hunting them. The Warriors will now do whatever it takes to survive the night, running, fighting, and hiding while trying to get back home. Can The Warriors survive the long night and prove their innocence?
The film gives its audience a great introduction to each member of The Warriors with short and quick moments of dialogue as the credits roll with a funky, futuristic soundtrack. Within the film’s opening sequence, I was highly invested. With minimal effort from the viewer, I was surprised at how much information we gained, such as where The Warriors are heading, why, and what type of characters they are all within the group. The film doesn’t go back to tell the backstories of each member or explain details about the world they currently live in. Instead, as the audience, we are thrown straight into it at a fun and snappy pace.
The Warriors’ duration feels like a quick flick. This is because of the film’s snappy pace and the fun comic-book-style transitions. Considering this film was made in 1979, it still feels modern and provides many fun elements that many movie buffs will even enjoy in the present day.
The film’s costume designs are also fresh and creative. Sure, some viewers may disagree, as some outfits are a little out there, but as The Warriors encounter other gangs who wish to fight, each gang has a catchy name with matching outfits and a reason for their group’s name. Some gangs are just thugs, criminals, or, worse, insane, violent murderers. The mixed characters presented in this film keep it all fun and exciting.
I supported our leading characters as The Warriors try to travel and survive. And I wanted to see them deliver sweet revenge on those who wronged them, and I hoped for a showdown. The results are gratifying and yet unpredictable. As stated above, I felt the film’s soundtrack deserves high praise. The film’s funky techno track sets the film’s pace and tone.
Overall, The Warriors is, without a doubt, a great classic film. The film has brainless fun, entertainment, and violence with a basic concept and snappy plot. The film also packs an excellent soundtrack, which is memorable and exciting. The entire movie is unpredictable and gratifying, leaving viewers with exciting entertainment. My only honest regret is I didn’t watch this film sooner. Still, thanks to the Australian label Imprint Films, movie lovers can experience both a Director’s Cut and the Orignal Theatrical Cut on Blu-ray, packed with many outstanding bonus features, including an impressive DTS HD audio track.
