Shy but talented mechanical mastermind Malcolm (Colin Friels) lives in Melbourne, Australia and works with trams (his favourite things to be around). But when Malcolm is fired for building his own tram, he’s unsure what he’ll do next. Jobless and with little cash remaining, Malcolm is a bit lost in life.
Thankfully, a knock on the door from a stranger named Frank (John Hargreaves) asking about a room to rent will change everything in Malcolm’s life. Frank has just been released from prison and is loaded with money to pay Malcolm for a room, even offering to help with the bills. But it’s not long until Frank starts teaching Malcolm what the world of crime is all about. Soon, Malcolm finds a new life of crime with the help of some of his inventions along the way. Eventually, Malcolm will even attempt to pull off one of the biggest heists in Australian history.
Malcolm is an Australian movie filmed and shot in Melbourne, Victoria. There is a wonderful sense of creativity from the film’s start, thanks to Colin Friels’s performance as Malcolm. Malcolm has many fun moments and is generally likeable with his shy personality. Watching this kind of innocent man enter a world of crime and robberies was entertaining and came with many unexpected moments. Malcolm’s creations and general passion for trams and making new inventions added to this fun.
Thanks to Australian distributor Umbrella Entertainment, Malcolm (1986) has been released on Blu-ray with an all-new 4K restoration. The new release is stacked with bonus features, including featurettes, audio commentaries, interviews, and more.
Overall, this is truly a fun film with pleasing elements of both charm and creativity. As an Australian film, I can understand why so many people love it, and I’m surprised at how well this film still holds up. Colin Friels’s performance as Malcolm is brilliant and unforgettable.
