Laura (Andi Matichak) is a single mother who works as a school teacher and lives with her one and only son, David (Luke David Blu). Life for the two of them seems well until Laura hears some strange noise coming from her son’s bedroom in the middle of the night. She decides to check on him while sleeping and finds a strange group of people standing around his bed! Naturally, Laura freaks out and calls the police. As the police arrive, we learn that no harm has come to David. We also discover that Laura has a dark past and was part of a cult as a little girl but managed to escape. Could this be the same group that was in David’s room recently?
As Laura tries to move forward and recover from the horrible experience, David begins to feel unwell. Laura is forced to confront her past and do everything to find out what is wrong with her son before it is too late. On the flip side, Police Officer Paul (Emile Hirsch) is also suspicious about Laura’s past and her son and begins to investigate with his partner, following Laura’s dark and bloody trail across town.
Son is bloody, violent, and very gory with supernatural themes. The visual effects here are generally excellent, and the suspense that gets built up from time to time is also done well. Visually, while mostly dark, it’s still pleasing to watch, and the audio track is a positive complement to what you see.
Performances from the film’s leads are, for the most part ok. There are moments where interactions between Laura and David don’t feel quite natural and convincing. Still, moments, where the two leads are required to deliver tension and suspense, are more successful and praiseworthy. But as for the plot, it is basic, and the story itself had several weak and vague moments. I found myself questioning many aspects of the plot even after the credits rolled. The film is also insanely predictable despite trying to deliver big twists to its audiences. The big twist moments are far too obvious right from the start, making it impossible not to see the big shocks a mile ahead.
Overall, it is a bloody, gross, supernatural story about a single mother who will do anything for her son, including digging up her past life as a member of a dark cult. Performances are fine, but the leads have moments of unconvincing dialogue and good tension. Son has a nice set-up as a horror movie but is generally vague in its plot details. The big reveal is highly predictable, and I also found it to be a massive letdown and disappointment. This film will undoubtedly have its followers, but sadly this didn’t work for me as well as I would have preferred.
