Logan (aka Wolverine) is now living in the near future. Logan is older, weary, a heavy drinker and more foul mannered than we have ever seen him before. Logan is also taking care of his ailing friend “Professor X” (played once again by Patrick Stewart) and both are living and hiding on the other side of the Mexican border. Logan lives a basic life working as a limo driver and tries to stay out of trouble. His life forever changes after he encounters a young female mutant and soon he is pursued by a new enemy.
While some may complain that the film’s cast is small, I found this a positive and one of the film’s major strength. By having a small cast the film was able to provide amazing character development. Logan (Hugh Jackman) has successfully provided what I feel is his best performance yet as ‘The Wolverine’. You can tell that the actor Hugh Jackman has given every bit of remaining energy into this film. The overall look of Logan was also fantastic (his scars, eyes, hair, the aging etc). Comic book fans and X-Men followers will give a thumbs up when they see the darker side of Logan/Wolverine-like we have never had before- cutting off arms and limbs during a fight scene is just one of many examples. My only complaint about the film is the 2nd act does slow down compared to the highs experienced in the first and final act.
Logan has a completely different setting and style to all the previous X-Men films. It is gritty, bloody and brutal. The film’s opening scene alone shows this. I understand many X-Men fans demanded this, plus this is actually more correct to how the comics always displayed the Wolverine/Logan character. Parents, be warned- there is a higher volume of foul language & violence compared to the previous X-Men instalments. The film also has a flash of nudity which also seems to add to the film’s MA15+ rating.
Overall, Logan is a thrill ride that officially comes to an end. The journey that began with the introduction to the X-Men and Wolverine in the year 2000 goes off with a bang and explores the lead character like we have never seen before. Logan’s story and action alone will leave movie lovers feeling very satisfied.
