Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) is a book writer who had success in the past writing about celebrities. In the present day, Lee struggles to make ends meet, and the last book she wrote has failed, with many stores now clearing it on sale. Her agent also tells her that her current idea for her next book is pointless, a waste of time and destined to fail. Lee is desperate for cash and lacking “Finesse” in her writing…until!
Lee begins to get creative and discovers the art “forging” literary letters, even adding a fake autograph on the bottom of each message. Lee takes the counterfeit typed notes to various bookkeepers who gladly pay her a decent sum of money, thinking Lee has given them the real deal.
Lee has now found a way to get by in life, and she continues to scam the world with her huge lie. Joining her on this lie is a long time friend, Jack (Richard E Grant), who we discover also has a few naughty tricks to complement Lee’s new desires.
I have always enjoyed Melissa McCarthy as an actress, but I must be honest and state that some of her recent work in films has been extremely disappointing to see (The Happytime Murders & Tammy are just a few to name). Thankfully Melissa McCarthy delivers a performance that reminds the world of cinema that she’s still got it. Lee is someone who has struggles in life but will also gladly call it like it is (Hence why Melissa McCarthy is a solid choice to play the role). As Lee keeps digging herself in deeper and deeper with her lies, I found myself genuinely curious to know the outcome, even more so when I saw the out the film is based on real events.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this film, and it was awesome to see actress Melissa McCarthy back on the screen, delivering a worthy performance that I’ve genuinely missed seeing for some time now. This film also tells an exciting story based on an actual event which will interest and surprise many movie lovers.
