Based on a true story and actual events, Bombshell tells the story of a group of women who work at Fox News. Hard-working news presenter Gretchen (Nicole Kidman) is sick and tired of being harassed on air by her fellow news presenters. To top it off, she was wronged even more by her boss, Roger Ailes (John Lithgow). Gretchen is demoted and shortly after she is fired. Gretchen decides to make a stand against the head of the Fox News network, Roger, and has discussions with her lawyers. Soon we learn that Gretchen isn’t the only one experiencing harassment from the same man.
Fellow co-workers Megyn (Charlize Theron) and Kayla (Margot Robbie) have also had different encounters with Roger Ailes, and in the end, lives are affected forever due to personal harassment and conflict.
Going into this film, I personally wasn’t aware of the true story this film was based on. The story as one would expect is quite dramatic, and some moments are simply uncomfortable to watch. After the film’s general introduction is in motion, I found myself very curious to know how this film would end, and I wanted to know if any of these women would receive justice.
Performances in Bomshell are off the charts, particularly for actress Charlize Theron. Not only does Charlize Theron give what I feel is the best performance out of the leading ladies, but the actress is almost unrecognizable due to her appearance and accent for the film. It’s truly impressive. Actresses Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman were also outstanding considering the film’s themes which in my opinion would not have been an easy task to tackle. John Lithgow, who plays Roger Ailes, was fantastic in this role. Playing an old overweight man who has wrong desires would not have been a simple task but the actor (as usual) nails it.
The film’s audio and visual were also a pleasure to see. Everything on-screen and all the spoken dialogue was clear and crisp and at no point a disappointment. The filming style is also crafty and creative, and when it’s combined with the type of story, it’s all very engaging to watch. It should also be noted that this film was directed by Jay Roach who is best known for directing a range of comedic films such as Austin Powers (1997), Meet the Parents (2000) & The Champaign (2012). The director is taking a new type of direction and tackling real-life dramas. After seeing this film, I welcome the director to tackle this type of genre again in the future.
Overall, Bombshell tells a powerful true story which will not be an easy watch due to its themes. After watching it I had no regrets, but I simply felt encouraged to share this film with my fans. Performances are outstanding, particularly from actress Charlize Theron who is almost unrecognisable. The film’s style also something to praise and is a great combination with the story. Bombshell is highly interesting, yet uncomfortable, but had my full attention for the duration. My determination to know the film’s ending only grew as the film progressed.
