Have you ever wondered why you are on Earth? Or perhaps, you’ve questioned what’s your primary purpose and destiny. Let me introduce you to a film that might have the answers you seek- Monty Python’s: The Meaning of Life. This film consists of various comedy skits, random gags and musical numbers that all focus on life itself, starting right where all the excitement happens: the miracle of birth.
Once again, the Monty Python crew consists of actors such as John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Graham Chapman and Michael Palin. The Monty Python team continue to push the limits of culture, religion and history as they create humour to show us just how crazy and wacky life is.
As a comedy feature, there is plenty to admire here. There are loads of creative ideas that have come to life wonderfully. While not all gags will make viewers laugh, I am proud to say for the vast majority of this film, I couldn’t help but find myself either laughing, giggling or perhaps being shocked at some of the unexpected and random gags throughout. The opening itself is a prime example of something you just have to experience for yourself. During this sequence, we watch a group of older men working in a building that suddenly transforms into an ultimate pirate fight with another building.
Naturally, the leads once again deliver great performances, with John Cleese and Michael Palin being the more notable standouts for me. Lines of dialogue are confidently delivered, and comedic timing is great. It’s evident that the cast loves to dress up; again, most roles they tackle (including women or pretending to be young boys) are believable and funny. I was surprised by the smooth transitions between skits, giving the viewers the experience of a journey to find the unexpected meaning of life.
Overall, if you’ve ever witnessed a Monty Python film, you know what to expect- random, outrageous comedy that pushes the boundaries in areas of life, religion and history. Mostly, the Monty Python team deliver fun with their comedic timing and strong, wild performances. Naturally, some gags are going to be subjective. Still, I can’t deny the fabulous and beautiful creations the team has pulled off here. The smooth transitions, costume designs and random musical numbers among the skits truly take viewers on an unforgettable cinematic journey while attempting to answer the world’s most baffling question.
