Based on the well known Disney Animation, well, in fact, the same plot as the well known Disney Animation from 1994.
Set in the Pride Lands, a new baby lion is born. His name is Simba, and one day he shall be king of everything the light touches! However, Simba’s uncle “Scar” has something far more sinister in mind for Simba and Simba’s father: plans which will allow him to become the king instead. Scar rolls out his plans and Simba witnesses the death of his father. Taking the blame for his father’s death, Simba runs away and goes on a life-changing journey.
For this review, I plan on keeping the plot fairly vague as many movie lovers would have already seen the original animation. If you’ve never seen The Lion King Disney film from 1994, I simply respond in pure shock and horror. For me, the original Lion King film is an animation classic that I hold close to my heart. I would proudly even go as far as saying it’s one of my top 5 favourite Disney films of all time.
This time around instead of a cartoon/animation, we have a live-action feature which relies heavily on modern technology including CGI for its characters, creature and backgrounds. The film’s visuals, in particular, every animal’s design, in this live remake is incredible and flawless. Put the animals from the Lion King next to Planet Earth, and it’s a close match.
The same level of positives could also be said about film’s audio tracks, even though in the remake we have some new sneaky musical tracks that could be questioned. The return of James Earl Jones voice work is welcomed.
The biggest dissatisfaction with 2019s The Lion King is mostly to do with the lack of emotion from its leading characters. From the very beginning, our characters are very monotone, and the facial expressions go with it. Because of this, I found it challenging to enjoy myself while I relived this classic tale I’ve grown up with.
Another disappointment was to see this film was a darn near shot for shot remake (like approx. 97%!). Within this story or even its characters, I wished the film could have taken some risks with something (anything) to make this film more exciting. This film was made for those who want to go down memory lane or perhaps to parents who wish to introduce this film to a new generation of young ones who have never seen The Lion King until now.
Overall, I am one of those people who is slightly disappointed by this remake, especially by the lack of emotions coming from our leading characters. The film doesn’t offer anything new or exciting as a plot. The reasons for watching this version of the film are simply for those who wish to go down memory lane or perhaps for those who want to introduce the touching story to a new young generation.
