A Father’s Relentless Quest for Vengeance Unleashes a Brutal Path to the Truth
Christian (Peter Marshall) is a man presently fuelled by rage, anger, and vengeance. Determined to get answers, he visits various people to uncover new leads. If those he interacts with refuse to talk, they are subjected to various methods of torture and violence until new evidence and information are brought to the surface. After a few interrogations, it becomes evident that Christian’s anger comes from the news that his teenage daughter, Jesse (Hannah Levien), was not only terribly mistreated but also brutally murdered. While on his journey for vengeance, Christian meets Alice (Caroline Marohasy), a young woman who is secretly on the run. While Christian remains focused on his personal task, he offers to give Alice a ride, and an unlikely friendship develops, while he secretly embarks on a killing spree until he gets the answers he seeks, no matter the cost.
A Brutal Australian Crime Story Marking Steven Kastrissios’ Striking Directorial Debut
The Horseman is a crime story with a touch of mystery, featuring brutal violence throughout. The film was written and directed by Steven Kastrissios. The Horseman served as Kastrissios’ directorial debut, and to date, his only other film credit is a drama, thriller and horror film titled Bloodlands (2017). It should also be noted that The Horseman is an Australian film.

A Powerful Performance Anchors This Brutal and Gripping Journey of Vengeance
Actor Peter Marshall is absolutely fantastic as Christian. The actor is extremely believable in this role, particularly in his complete determination and his anger and hatred toward those he interacts with. The violence here is also realistic, and some moments, even when something occurs off-screen, did make me squirm. The plot is basic, yet I could not help but be intrigued by Christian’s journey, and I remained locked in to see the film’s ending, curious about whether he would succeed or fail. The film’s finale includes a couple of nice reveals, and the showdown felt rewarding and heightened when compared to the rest of the film.

A Gritty and Unrelenting Australian Revenge Tale That Grips You From Start to Finish
Overall, The Horseman is a gritty, tense and savage revenge film. With a simplistic plot that follows a man fueled by rage and passionate anger, willing to do whatever it takes to uncover the truth surrounding the brutal and heartbreaking death of his daughter, I truly could not take my eyes off the screen. I, too, was fueled with determination to see how this story would conclude, and yes, it certainly does not disappoint. With a compelling leading performance and a gritty revenge tale from Australia, what is not to love?
The Horseman (2008) is Now Available on Blu-ray thanks to Umbrella!
