Out in rural Australia, an earthquake occurs, resulting in disastrous consequences at the Western Atomic Long-Term Dumping Organization (WALDO), which stores nuclear waste. One worker, Heinrich (Ross Thompson), is on duty when a severe leak develops. Rising to the occasion, Heinrich does his best to contain the spill and protect others from harm. As the first person on site, Heinrich is acutely aware of the leak’s dangers, particularly its potential to contaminate the community’s water supply. However, management is more concerned about keeping the situation under wraps and believes there is no need to panic the public. Determined to alert others despite his contamination, Heinrich manages to escape the facility. Unfortunately, the effects of his exposure leave him in bed with only three days to live.
On the flip side, we are introduced to Larry (Steve Bisley), a car mechanic wrapping up a busy workday and about to begin his holiday. Larry plans to enjoy some peace and quiet and spend intimate time with his wife, Carmel (Arna-Maria Winchester). However, Heinrich interrupts their relaxation during an evening together outside their home. Larry and Carmel try to help Heinrich with his visible wounds, but Heinrich is struggling to recall what happened to him due to his recent traumatic experiences. Meanwhile, the hunt continues with WALDO management and various staff members trying to find Heinrich. Can Larry and Carmel help Heinrich uncover the truth about the new threats facing their community?
The Chain Reaction blends action, drama, and, surprisingly, science fiction elements. It is also an Ozploitation film written and directed by Ian Barry. Barry’s previous works include Robo Warriors (1996), Mermaids (2003), and others. I appreciated the concept and premise of this Australian film. The film opens excellently, effectively introducing the alarming threat posed by the spill. The Chain Reaction delivers for those who enjoy action sequences with fast cars and thrilling stunts. I found the film’s conclusion to be both intense and satisfying. Visually, this film stands out; everything appears sharp, and the variety of camera angles is quite impressive.

Unfortunately, the pacing slows considerably after the introduction, which features a significant spill. The pacing is especially slow during Larry and Carmel’s introductions. To make matters worse, the film reaches a near standstill as the main characters try to figure out why Heinrich has coincidentally lost his memory. This becomes quite frustrating for viewers eager for the revelation so the plot can progress. Additionally, the editing between scenes often feels clunky, as if the transitions don’t flow well together.
Overall, The Chain Reaction is a solid Ozploitation film. It features an excellent premise, alarming danger, and enjoyable action sequences involving cars. The performances are acceptable, but I found the visual style awe-inspiring. I appreciated the opening, the introduction of the central threat, and the finale. However, the film does drag on for too long in parts, and the editing between various scenes is questionable. While there’s some fun, I couldn’t help but wish the storyline had been more substantial.
