Superman (2025)

Spoiler-Free Introduction

To avoid spoilers and preserve the film’s surprises, this review will remain deliberately vague regarding major plot details.

A New Kind of Superman Story

Welcome to a whole new kind of Superman film. One of the most refreshing aspects of this new take is that it completely skips the traditional origin story. There’s no retelling how Superman came to Earth—instead, a simple on-screen text sets the stage, giving viewers just enough backstory before throwing them headfirst into the chaos of his current world. From the opening moments, we’re immersed in a story where Superman is already established and facing a challenge unlike anything he’s encountered before. This time, he’s up against a new kind of enemy—one that is genuinely capable of defeating him. Behind this threat is Lex Luthor (played with ferocity by Nicholas Hoult), whose shadowy team has engineered a weapon that could finally bring Superman to his knees or put him deep underground.

A Crisis of Faith and Identity

As Superman faces this new threat that endangers both him and the entire city, shocking evidence comes to light—evidence that threatens everything he stands for. Suddenly, the public begins to question whether Superman is here to save the world or conquer it. Is he truly the kind-hearted hero we believe in, or something far more dangerous? These doubts cast a long shadow, not only on Superman’s legacy but also on his relationship with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), which begins to show signs of strain under the pressure. With the weight of the world pressing down, Superman must face his greatest trial yet. Can he rise above the chaos, defeat Lex Luthor, and restore faith in the world?

James Gunn’s Signature Touch

Superman is an action-packed, comedic adventure, but most importantly, it is a genuine superhero film. It boldly ignores previous DC instalments—such as Justice League, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman—and instead marks the beginning of a fresh new era for the DC Universe. Co-written and directed by James Gunn, a filmmaker who’s no stranger to the superhero genre, this film carries his signature blend of heart, humour, and style. Adding to an impressive resumé that already includes The Suicide Squad (2021), all three Guardians of the Galaxy films, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Gunn once again proves he knows how to balance spectacle with soul. If you’re a fan of his previous work, you’ll be pleased to know that Superman is packed with everything we’ve come to expect from him—emotion, fun, high-stakes drama, and crowd-pleasing entertainment for all ages.

A Simple But Effective Plot

The film’s plot is refreshingly simple, which works in its favour. It’s more than enough to see Superman’s world turned completely upside down in a way we’ve never seen on the big screen. The journey he’s forced to undertake feels both fresh and bold. Interestingly, Superman isn’t the only hero getting an introduction in this new universe—far from it. Many new characters step into the spotlight, including his lovable adopted dog, Krypto, who instantly steals hearts and provides genuine warmth whenever he’s on screen. The supporting cast is given just enough time to shine without overshadowing the core story.

Visuals and Music That Elevate

The visual effects are often awe-inspiring, particularly during the many action sequences. Moments like Superman soaring through the sky evoke a strong sense of nostalgia, evoking memories of the classic films I grew up with. However, I can see how some viewers might interpret this approach as visually weaker or too retro in tone. What truly elevates the experience, though, is the emotional and beautifully composed musical score—it adds heart and gravitas in all the right places.

Strong Performances All Around

David Corenswet proves to be a fantastic Superman, nailing both the lighter charm and the deeper emotional weight of the role. Nicholas Hoult is also excellent as Lex Luthor, especially when unleashing the character’s rage and calculated intensity. Although Rachel Brosnahan feels perfectly cast as Lois Lane, I couldn’t help but wish her character had been given a greater introduction. Brosnahan brings likability and confidence to the role, but the screenplay doesn’t quite give her the standout entrance that a character like Lois deserves.

Pacing and Future Promise

Superman’s journey, on the other hand, is nothing short of thrilling, and the introduction of multiple new characters adds layers of excitement and promise for the future of the DC Universe. That said, there are moments where the pacing stumbles—some scenes drag on longer than necessary, which slightly dulls the momentum. For the sake of spoilers, I’ll leave it at that—but overall, the film still soars far more often than it stumbles.

A Fresh, Bold Success

Overall, like the iconic “S” on Superman’s chest, the name James Gunn brought hope to the franchise, and thankfully, he delivers. Not only has Gunn soared, but he’s roared with bold success. This is a fresh, thrilling new beginning for the DC Universe—no tired origin stories, no retreads. We’re dropped straight into Superman’s journey, chaos, conflict, and heart. The soundtrack? Simply superb—spectacular and moving. David Corenswet is pitch-perfect as Superman, bringing strength and soul to the role. And yes, you’ll want to cuddle Krypto after every scene he’s in. This isn’t just action-packed—it’s emotionally resonant, timely, and exactly the kind of story both movie lovers and the world need.
