Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

The film begins with a narration explaining the Legend of the Ten Rings and its origins. We also learn about the man who discovered the powerful rings and used them consistently until something significant happened in his life.  The film fast forwards to the present day, and we are introduced to Shaun (Simu Liu), who generally keeps to himself and works as a parking valet. Working with him by his side is a long-life friend Katy (Awkwafina), who enjoys taking risks and is presently encouraging Shaun to have some fun with a late-night, drinking and singing karaoke. But one day, while the two are hanging out, Shaun is attacked by a group of unknown men.  Major reveals are made about his life, including his past, and he is now forced to confront his past and become the ultimate weapon to save the world.

I’m proud to say Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a worthy instalment to the Marvel films. It introduces a stack of new and fresh characters that are quite likeable and even have heartfelt moments. The film also introduces new elements and concepts such as fantasy, which were quite unexpected but highly welcoming to see.

Shang-Chi welcomes a new action style thanks to the talented and creative use of martial arts. Action sequences are highly entertaining, especially when Shaun is attacked for the first time. Performances, for the most part, are praiseworthy. Shaun and Katy are great leads to follow, with actress Awkwafina delivering plenty of laughs to the screen.

I found the plot quite engaging, and the film felt rather fresh.  Our story doesn’t take long to get underway while introducing new characters and their adventure. Like most Marvel films, there are several references and surprises along the way, which will have fans even more excited while watching on the big screen. Like all Marvel films, I also highly recommend you stay for the credits as viewers will be greeted with not one but two end credit sequences.

Overall, this is a pleasing instalment to the Marvel series. The film successfully brings us many new likeable characters while introducing a new and fresh story. This story takes risks, and a major highlight is the introduction of fantasy and martial arts. Performances are fun, and again, like all Marvel films, the visuals are a knockout. While the film isn’t the greatest film within the entire Marvel series, it’s still certainly a worthy one and comes highly recommended.
