Rocketman is the story of the famous singer and performer “Elton John”. To my surprise, this film is a musical.

The film begins with Elton John as a young boy discovering a love for playing the piano and us witnessing his distant relationship with both of his parents. Naturally, the film also focuses on Elton John as an adult along with re-living many classic hits with dance sequences for fans to enjoy too.

When I first heard online that actor Taron Egerton (best known for his role in Kingsman) would be playing Elton John, I was rather curious because Elton John is such a unique person. After watching the film, I found his performance breathtaking and extremely surprising. Taron Egerton is incredibly convincing as Elton John, singing and dealing with the multiple dark challenges the singer faced in real life.

Watching this film on 4K Bluray, I was also impressed by the audio track, which is easily the biggest strength of the film. Re-living the classic musical hits with impressive dance sequences, I found it impossible not to either sing along or tap my feet. Each song also gave an insight, sometimes in the form of a fantasy, into the mind of Elton John. Some of these fantasies may seem a little much or seem vague as to what it all represents. This brings me to the next point.

One of my issues with Rocketman is many stories which I was personally keen to know more about our skip over or ignored. Same could be said about moral messages the film tries to introduce but are never concluded. The film’s primary focus is to share the music and reveal Elton John’s dark past in many areas which includes his love life, drugs, his parents and the list goes on.

Overall, Rocketman is an entertaining film, and I was surprised to find the movie was a musical which I wasn’t expecting. Actor Taron Egerton also brings an outstanding performance and has simply left me speechless upon witnessing the results. Needless to say, this is one for Elton John fans who will enjoy some classic hits on the big screen and for those who wish to know about Elton’s dark past and challenges.
