Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) lives in Australia as mercenary. He spends his days drinking and jumping off cliffs. Based on Tyler’s daily lifestyle, it’s evident that he has a dark past which haunts him every moment of his life.
Soon the mercenary is offered a dangerous mission which he accepts. His mission is to “extract” and rescue a young boy and protect him from an international crime lord. But Tyler discovers there more to this mission than he expected. He and his entire team have been double-crossed, leaving only Tyler and Boy to try and escape the city.
As Tyler begins his mission, we understand that the character is rather skilled and efficient as a mercenary. He’s also surprisingly competent when it comes to shooting and hand to hand combat.
As a film, Extraction is loaded with action which delivers a very unique and brutal style. The film is extremely violent, and the deaths may shock some viewers. The filming style of all the action is enjoyable and impressive. Visually I was able to see and enjoy all the work that was my big screen, and I found every moment somewhat surprising. Actor Chris Hemsworth is convincing as the professional mercenary and it great to see the actor carry his typical Australian accent for the film which also managed to bring some fun dialogue during heated moments.
To my surprise, Extraction has been filmed by a first time director, Sam Hargrave who has worked on many Marvel films working on Stunts. This would explain why this film carries such intense and realistic action sequences. As a film time director, this film is exceptionally remarkable given the final results and considering it was released straight to Netflix – Australia.
There are also heartfelt moment to had with our leading characters. While there is isn’t much back story or either character, I was thankful that some further development was made rather than making it a non-stop action ride. These moments can go a little longer than what a preferred, particularly during the halfway mark of the film.
Overall, Extraction is a brilliant action film. Considering this has been completed by a first time director who has past experiences with stuntwork in Marvel films, I feel it’s a fantastic start to the directors career. While the plot is downright basic, the action is entertaining and brilliantly filmed. Chris Hemsworth is also giving a believable performance, and I found everything on screen a blast from start to finish.
