It’s time to prepare your feeders in Beverly Hills because spring is here. Spring marks the beginning of the early appearance of hummingbirds, who return after spending the winter down south. Hummingbirds are, in fact, the world’s smallest birds. Every Little Thing features Terry Masear, who operates a hummingbird hotline from her home. Terry passionately cares for injured hummingbirds and tends to multiple birds daily. Since 2008, she has received over 20,000 calls about hummingbirds and often provides advice and support to those in need. As you can imagine, Terry’s work is both delicate and emotional, requiring her to remain calm and steady, especially when faced with moments that could lead to failure or loss.
As the documentary progresses, we witness Terry handling various cases involving Hummingbirds who require her attention and gentle care. Some of the hummingbirds include Jimmy, the Sydney Twins, Wasabi, Cactus and more. Each case is unique, and Terry’s approach to caring for each hummingbird varies accordingly. We see firsthand how Terry manages her work; it becomes evident that she must do everything correctly to ensure their survival. The documentary also provides a solid education on all things related to hummingbirds while offering touching and heartfelt glimpses of Terry on a deeper, more personal level.
Every Little Thing was both written and directed by Sally Aitken, who has also created other documentaries such as Hot Potato: The Story of The Wiggles (2023), Shark Beach with Chris Hemsworth (2021), Playing with Sharks: The Valerie Taylor Story (2021), and one of my all-time favourite films, David Stratton: A Cinematic Life (2017). Additionally, the film was inspired by Terry Masear’s book Fastest Things on Wings.
Before watching this film, I must admit that I didn’t know much about hummingbirds. I was surprised by the wealth of information presented and found many aspects fascinating and wonderful. For instance, I learned that hummingbirds are not only sweet but also intelligent. Additionally, I discovered that a hummingbird can flap its wings up to fifty times per second. Like humans, hummingbirds face struggles and challenges, which Terry connects with on a greater level.
Viewers will leave the film feeling informed about hummingbirds, and its hard not to also feel uplifted and inspired by Terry’s past and present. Her remarkable journey has not only benefited others but also made a positive impact on many hummingbirds, ultimately affecting people and the world for the better. In addition to the wealth of information provided, the film conveys a powerful message: when you show love and compassion for something, even if it doesn’t directly benefit you, it is an act of greatness. Visually, the film features many stunning moments, such as close-up shots of a hummingbird flapping its wings in slow motion, which are truly impressive.
Overall, life in Hollywood for a hummingbird rehabber is truly fascinating, and this experience is worth having for yourself. Whether or not you have a passion for hummingbirds, this film deserves your attention on the big screen. It’s not only an informative documentary about these remarkable birds, but it also offers many visually stunning moments that you’ll want to see firsthand. The film carries a heartfelt and positive message, showcased through the journey of its lead character, Terry, who shares life experiences that are rarely depicted in Australian cinema. This is another outstanding contribution from Sally Aitken!
