In case you’ve never heard of him; David Stratton is a very well-known film critic in Australia. Best known for his tv series “The Movie Show” which also featured another respectful film critic, Margret Pomeranz.
A Cinematic Life is generally about the man himself, David Stratton as he talks about his upbringing as a child and discovering life in cinema. David also shares personal elements and the challenges that he faced growing up within his family and his journey which lead him to a career in Australia.
David also became involved with many film festivals and became passionate about supporting Australian cinema. This documentary not only shares about the man himself but also takes a look back at some of the Australian films that changed the world forever.
Also joining the documentary are many Australian celebrities who voice their opinion on certain films and David Stratton’s impact on cinema. Some of these guests include Hugo Weaving, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett, Bryan Brown, Russell Crowe and much more.
One of the major reasons I wanted to share this film is simply because, upon its first watching, this documentary film truly impacted me and encouraged me in a big way. At the time of viewing, I had started blogging my film reviews online. Like David, I guess there were times where I too felt like a black sheep in life and wanted to watch at least one film a day and then tell the world all about my opinions. But there are so many elements about David’s life and Australian films that I wasn’t aware of until I watched this feature.
The pacing of this documentary is great, but it is mixed up with interviews, discussions of films and David Stratton’s life. Having all these mixed into one documentary kept held my interest 100% of the time. This could also be due to my love of anything cinema related.
Overall, this is one of my favourite documentaries. Not everyone will feel the same as me with this film, but it truly impacted and inspired me in a major way in my personal life. I found the life of David Stratton to be rather fascinating and extremely encouraging when it comes to my goals and dreams. If your fellow movie lover (like myself), this film is a must-watch for you. David Stratton: A Cinematic Life (2017) is Now Available on DVD!
