Dave Huges: Ridiculous (2023)

Introducing a one-hour special from Australia’s most popular stand-up performer, the legendary comedian Dave Hughes, also known as Hughesy. In the new special, titled Ridiculous, Dave tackles many comedic topics in front of a live audience, including the pandemic and the aftermath for Melbourne, Australia. Along with this, Dave tackles vaping, becoming a vegan, interacting on a recent Qantas flight, and the challenges of being a good husband and father to his children.

I’ve always been a massive fan of Dave Hughes, and I’m still the proud owner of his CD (yes, a CD!) titled Whatever. Whatever remains one of my favourite stand-ups. Once again, the comedian is random, witty, and extremely loud on stage. His material here is relevant and highly relatable such as the pandemic and Melbourne’s lockdowns. It is incredible to think Australians once lived in such fear. Now, as the title of the show states, it seems ‘ridiculous’. Thankfully, Dave gets away with it because he lived through it personally.

Once again, Dave embraces, praises, and welcomes his crowd’s positivity and energy throughout the evening. There are plenty of unexpected moments where he interacts with various audience members and finds himself going off-topic, all in the name of laughter. Dave also has no problems making fun of himself at different moments, including stating that he is an interesting individual.

Overall, it’s incredible that even after twenty-five years of stand-up, comedian Dave Hughes still proves he can deliver relatable, fun laughs and have a ‘ridiculously’ good time on stage. As a Hughesy fan, I am proud to find this one-hour special highly entertaining and brainless. It’s honestly impossible not to laugh or chuckle at various moments. Tackling challenging subject matters such as the pandemic is done well- after all, the man lived through the Melbourne lockdowns and survived to share the enlightening experience first-hand.
