A Rising Lawyer Facing the Challenge That Could Change Everything
Roger (Steve Martin) is a skilled lawyer eager to advance his career. On the side, he enjoys playing in a local jazz band, but sadly, despite the joy it brings him, it isn’t advancing his career or bringing him any substantial income. When Roger pleads with his boss, Burton (Dana Elcar), to make him a partner in the firm, Burton agrees to let him prove himself by working on a challenging case. If he succeeds, he will become an official partner. But unfortunately for Roger, the case is far from a walk in the park.
A Dying Woman’s Outrageous Plan Puts Roger in Hot Water
Roger must care for and handle the will of a dying woman named Edwina (Lily Tomlin). Despite being on her deathbed, Edwina has a plan to remain alive on Earth and continue managing her fortune. Instead of dying, she will undergo a spiritual transference in which her soul and mind will enter the body of the beautiful Terry (Victoria Tennant). Naturally, Roger finds the idea completely outrageous and offends Edwina, leading to his immediate dismissal from her property and the case.
A Body Swap Gone Wrong Forces Roger to Share His Life with Edwina
But when the time comes for Edwina’s soul to enter Terry, an accident occurs, and her soul instead enters Roger’s body! Now Edwina can control half of Roger’s body and speak, though only Roger can hear her. Roger can also see her, but only in mirrors or reflections. His world begins to unravel as he struggles to adjust to his new reality. The question is, can Roger and Edwina work together to find a way to get her out of his body before she is trapped there forever?
Carl Reiner’s Hilarious Fantasy Romance Brings All of Me to Life
All of Me is a romantic comedy and body-swap film that incorporates elements of fantasy. The film was directed by Carl Reiner, whose past work includes The Jerk (1979), Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982), The Man with Two Brains (1983), Summer School (1987), and more.
Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin Shine in a Perfect Blend of Comedy and Heart
As you might expect, the film’s greatest strength comes from its leads, Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin. Their on-screen chemistry is fantastic, and they deliver plenty of comedic moments, such as when Roger attempts to use the toilet or make love to a woman. At the same time, the pair experience heartfelt moments, and an unexpected friendship and romance develop. Roger also embarks on a significant journey of self-discovery, particularly regarding his life choices and what truly brings him joy.

A Strong Start and Engaging Middle Give Way to a Less Satisfying Finale
In terms of pacing and story progression, I loved the film’s opening and second act. We gain a clear understanding of both Roger and Edwina as characters, as well as the high stakes they face as the clock ticks, and clearly feel that failure has disastrous consequences. However, the third act is less exciting, and the finale feels less rewarding and satisfying. Many moments surrounding the ending are silly and highly predictable, lacking the same energy and joy that the film establishes from the start.
A Charming Comedy Elevated by Its Leads, Despite a Weak Climax
All of Me (1984) is now available on Blu-ray thanks to Umbrella!
