Whiplash (2014) – Movie Review
16th July 2021 Written by Peter Walkden
Andrew (Miles Teller) is a young drummer who has dreams and the solid potential to become one of the greatest drummers of our time. Upon joining a music conservatory group, he is given an instructor and mentor named Fletcher (J.K. Simmons). On the first day of practice, Andrew learns that his new mentor will push him harder than anyone has before to help him unlock and achieve his ultimate potential as a drummer. While at first, Andrew is excited by this new opportunity and feels like he’s making a significant step in the right direction, Andrew is soon in for a huge surprise. Can he handle Fletcher’s teaching methods, or will he give up on the dream opportunity that has been presented to him?
Whiplash is best classed as a heavy drama film. Many moments on-screen are tense and suspenseful to watch, especially when we witness Fletcher’s method of attempting to teach or push his young students into something far greater than they could ever imagine. Performances are incredible and highly unforgettable. J.K. Simmons delivers what I feel is the most significant role within his entire career, and the performance of young Andrew by Miles Teller is equally impressive. The two leads are believable at all times.
I’ve always enjoyed the film’s style and the general look regarding visuals. Thankfully, this film also has a beautiful soundtrack with many great moments of jazz music. The audio track for sound effects is also tremendous, especially on the recent 4K UHD release, thanks to Australian distributor Umbrella Entertainment.
Overall, Whiplash is an incredible film. While it is not a film that’s easy to watch, it’s unforgettable based on the level of tension and drama. The performance from J.K Simmons might be the best work within his whole career, and actor Miles Teller is not far off that mark either. The 4K release includes a beautiful audio track for both effects and the delightful jazzy soundtrack. Achieving the right tempo in all areas, this film naturally comes highly recommended, and I’m proud to say it is one of my all-time favourites.
