Tom (Liam Neeson) is a highly skilled and professional thief. He has robbed many banks, and each time managed to escape with a large sum of money without ever getting caught. No one knows who he is or what he looks like. In the news they call him “The In & Out Man”. But something unexpected happens to Tom that changes his life. He meets a woman named Annie (Kate Walsh) who works at a storage facility. Upon their first introduction, the two straight away develop a romance which becomes quite serious. Tom even purchases a stunning new home and invites Annie to move in with him.
However, Tom has yet to tell Annie about his past and his crimes when it comes to robbing banks. To make things right, Tom decides to contact the FBI personally, offer to turn himself in and make a deal. Tom is asking for a sentence that will allow visits along with handing over every bit of cash he ever stole. But unfortunately for Tom, the two FBI agents assigned to investigate and hear Tom’s confession are dirty and would instead steal the money for themselves. Tom manages to escape the FBI and is now on the run, framed for a murder which he did not commit. Can Tom prove his innocence and confirm that the FBI agents double-crossed him? After all, Tom himself is a criminal! And more importantly, can Tom protect the love of his life?
Honest Thief includes a great supporting cast which consists of Jai Courtney, Jeffrey Donovan, and Robert Patrick. Jai Courtney particularly does very well in this film and even provides a convincing American accent, along with portraying a ruthless and careless attitude.
Those who love Liam Neeson in action films will be rather pleased at what is in store for them here. But, just a warning, Honest Thief feels more of a crime story than a hardcore action film. Action scenes feel brief and quick but still leave a lasting impression. Anyone who has seen a Liam Neeson film where a character is seeking revenge will generally know what to expect. Honest Thief also had moments of quirky and random humour along the way. One example of this is where we see an FBI agent who continues to bring his pet dog to work due to a recent divorce.
While the film premise of a revenge tale along with having the leading hero being none other than action legend Liam Neeson sounds exciting, sadly this film is far from perfect. Honest Thief is filled with many unusual editing choices. There are many instances where scenes do not feel like they match up and don’t always feel consistent. The film’s dialogue is also questionable. I think the actors are trying to do everything they can, but at many times the characters can feel slightly bland and uninteresting. The relationship between Tom and Annie is also something that never feels entirely believable and lacked convincing chemistry on screen.
Overall, for the most part Liam Neeson fans will be quite pleased with this new feature film even if it feels somewhat familiar as we witness a man on the run hunting those down who have wronged him. Honest Thief feels more of a crime story with a few minor action scenes thrown into the mix. While some fun can be had here, there are also some elements here which disappointed me, such as the strange editing choices between scenes and key moments where the dialogue feels bland and uninteresting. Nevertheless, those seeking another revenge tale with tough guy Liam Neeson will most certainly take joy in this new cinematic release.
