Champagne! We all know what it is, and perhaps some of you are drinking a glass of it while you’re reading this very review. But, do you know where Champagne came from or are you aware of Champagne throughout history? Sparkling: The Story of Champagne reveals all. The film begins with many famous quotes from history involving Champagne before educating the viewer and revealing how Champagne came about and its meaning today.
Sparkling: The Story of Champagne gives its audience members many insights. For the most part, the documentary feels like a general history lesson. It discusses many figures from history who have influenced or changed the way we look at Champagne in the present day. At various points, the film also brings to light some historical marketing and advertising moments involving Champagne. Let’s not forget the biggest debate and question- who invented Champagne? There were many facts and details that I never knew about, and discovering this information was a positive experience.
Not only do we receive an education about Champagne, but we also hear various interviews and insights from well-known people. Along with that, we hear from many different companies and retailers today. Celebrities also make appearances as some of them even have their own premium Champagne storage houses and thankfully give the audience a private tour.

While the film combines many aspects and details, its pacing is questionable, especially by the third act, which feels like a mish-mash of various topics and doesn’t feel consistent. The film does have moments of minor narrations but again, nothing that feels constant throughout.
Overall, lovers of Champagne will certainly take joy in this documentary. While the documentary is informative, the pacing is sadly questionable. The film can sometimes feel like a mixture of various clips and interviews, especially during the third act. It can also occasionally feel like an educational lesson, giving audiences a deep dive into the universe of Champagne and how it’s changed the world. Nevertheless, those who enjoy a bubbly drink shall have blissful enjoyment watching this documentary.
