Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)

Continuing from the first film (which featured in 2002), we are shown the outbreak that occurred within Racoon City. Starting in the city’s hospital, it doesn’t take long until the entire city is filled with zombies. With no choice left, the city will be closed off, and a nuclear bomb will be dropped to destroy the entire city.

After surviving the underground facility from the previous instalment, Alice wakes up in a hospital and is quite shocked by the outbreak as the virus has now spread above ground. Now it’s up to Alice and a handful of survivors remaining in Racoon City to stay alive and safe from the hordes of zombies, lickers and mutant creatures, and try to escape the city before it all blows up. The group will also be forced to take on the most sinister foe yet known as project Nemesis.

I am a fan of all the Resident Evil games. Having enjoyed the previous instalment, I was quite excited to see how this sequel would go. While the previous film was different from any video within the Resident Evil gaming series, Resident Evil: Apocalypse feels more familiar. Those who have played the Resident Evil 2 game will certainly feel as if the game has come to life on-screen with this instalment.

Visually, this film is highly pleasing, especially if you’re a fan of the original video game (like me!). Out of all the Resident Evil films, this instalment most resembles one of the video games. The zombies and creatures certainly look amazing, and I enjoyed seeing the biggest villain, known as Nemesis, make a fun appearance (even if his voice is a weaker aspect).

Actress Milla Jovovich is yet again pleasing on-screen as Alice. New characters, including Jill Valentine, played by Sienna Guillory, and Carlos Olivera, played by Oded Fehr, also bring a likeable presence. Other characters, however, feel more cheesy and are highly forgettable. The pacing of this film is great as everything flows well, delivering nothing but a great level of brainless entertainment.

Overall, those who have played the Resident Evil game should be fairly pleased. This film feels like a video game has come to life on the big screen. It’s brainless entertainment with zombies doing what they do best, and actresses Milla Jovovich and Sienna Guillory are confident and enjoyable to watch on-screen. Fans of the Resident Evil gaming series will naturally enjoy this film as it delivers nothing but plenty of guilty pleasure.
