After a secret specimen in a lab threatens the world, it’s up a whole new Suicide Squad from Belle Reve to save the day. Bloodsport (Idris Elba) has been invited to lead the new team but refuses. He naturally has a change of heart when he speaks to his daughter and learns of Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davies) plans if he doesn’t join the team.  He accepts, feeling he has no choice and is soon introduced to several odd villains he will now lead into combat. Their mission destination is on the island of Corto Maltese.  This new squad will be dropped off at a remote location before they journey into enemy territory. The question is, can this random group of villains save the world once again?

For the record, I wasn’t a fan of the previous Suicide Squad feature, which arrived in 2016. This was mostly due to the film’s plot, villain and several key characters (including The Joker). Thanks to the director James Gunn, I’m quite thrilled to say this is an impressive film for DC and Warner Brothers.

To my surprise, the film also reintroduces some characters from the previous instalment as well as some new ones. Not only are there plenty of villainous characters in the Suicide Squad, but the actors selected to play them are tremendous.  Idris Elba was certainly a highlight in his portrayal of the leading character Bloodsport, and the actor fitted well into this world of odd and crazy villains. Other worthy performances include John Cena, who plays a new character known as Peacemaker, and Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn.  Margot doesn’t disappoint and proves once again that she was born to play the role.

The plot of this film is filled with multiple surprises, twists and turns. Nothing about The Suicide Squad is ever predictable. The film is violent and gory, which is done to shock its audience (and it works!). Jokes are witty and, like the villains, highly twisted.  The timeline throughout the film was somewhat unexpected, and we travel back and forth in time several times.  It’s a welcoming style; however, even if I feel we’ve seen it in DC films previously.

Overall, The Suicide Squad is bloody, gory, witty, and the film is highly unpredictable right from the start. The plot is fun and fresh, and the large stack of on-screen characters are all highly entertaining. Audio and Visual aspects can’t be faulted. Director James Gunn has certainly delivered a film that will leave its audiences high and feeling rather entertained.
